Groom’s Style: Michael Levy of The Loveship
Tuesday, March 30th, 2010Type in “short groom” and the internet’s gonna kick back tons of panicky Short Groom/Tall Bride Q&As at you. If you’re part of a couple that fits this bill, you could make yourself crazy with all the step-ladder posing tips, dutch camera angles, shoe no-nos, wacky altar arrangements, and other misguided advice. Or… you could just chuck the rule book, hunt down a great-fitting suit, and tell yourself you look like a million bucks. Michael Levy did that. And he looks dynamite. (not that he outshone the bride, natch!)
Mike got married in LA on New Year’s Eve and recently posted the pix on The Loveship (the blog he too-seldom coauthors with his lovely now-wife Susie).
Both Mike and Susie spend a fair amount of time thinking about their personal style, experimenting with wardrobe choices, and shopping thrift stores and boutiques. And all that self-knowledge and clothing smarts paid off for them on their wedding day. The 5-foot-5 groom and his taller bride both look totally relaxed in their own skin (a tall order for ANY couple on the big day).
I love how natural and happy they look, don’t you?
And I love how there isn’t even an attempt to hide the height disparity. It’s practically emphasized in a couple of shots, with the groom standing down the hill from the bride etc. Damn the torpedoes!
MICHAEL LEVY’S OUTFIT:
The suit’s from BlackBlue in St. Paul. He posted about it in detail here. The shirt and tie are both J. Crew. Mike says:
“I snagged them both on the 30% Off for Orders Over $150 Sale last fall, which went towards the necessary tailoring bill which followed — $30 bought some quick darts to the back and an extra button on the cuffs to pull the sleeves higher without having to take them apart (two alterations which are cheaper than the alternatives but serve the same purpose, which might be a wise tip to your readers that may not already know.) Yes, that was all one sentence; no, I do not care.”
Exactly my point: dude doesn’t give a damn. Run-on sentences? Call the grammar police.
As for the bowtie, it proves yet again that those tired-out Rules for Short Guys the media’s so fond of are made to be broken. With a little know-how (yes, he tied it himself):
“I taught myself how by watching videos on YouTube. There are a few good ones, but the only real way to learn takes practice. It took about a half hour, but over time I finally figured it out.”
Congrats to the Loveship. Sail on.
